EU assigns military adviser in Ankara for first time TurDef
The European Union has taken an unprecedented step in its security and defence relations with Türkiye by appointing a military adviser who previously served in Ankara.

According to information obtained by TurDef, Colonel Adam Grzymkowski, who was Poland’s Defence Attaché in Ankara, began working at the European Commission on 1 November 2025 as a Seconded National Expert (SNE). He now serves as a military adviser to the Head of the EU Delegation.

The move comes amid growing recognition within the EU that Türkiye plays a key role in addressing the continent’s broader security challenges, particularly in response to the Russian threat. While Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration have long sought to block Türkiye’s participation in European defence initiatives such as the SAFE programme, Brussels appears to be acknowledging Ankara’s strategic importance in practice.

In a reciprocal move, Türkiye has also assigned an officer to engage with EU institutions under similar conditions. Both officers will operate under diplomatic rather than attaché status, meaning their activities will proceed through foreign ministries rather than formal military representation.
