Algeria is converting more T-62 main battle tanks into fire-support vehicles, it was revealed on 21 July when Chief of Staff General Saïd Chanegriha visited the Central Logistics Base in Beni Mered.
The Algerian Ministry of National Defence released photographs and a video showing Gen Chanegriha inspecting at least 16 T-62s that had their original turrets replaced with the Russian-made Berezhok turret that Algeria has been using to upgrade its BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles since the mid-2000s. [...] T-62s with the Berezhok were first seen in a parade held in Algiers on 5 July 2022, when 10 were displayed, and again in a parade on 4 November 2024, when 13 were displayed. They have been unofficially referred to as BMPT-62s, a name that uses the Russian abbreviation for tank support combat vehicle, such as the more heavily armed BMPT-72 that is in Algerian service in limited numbers.
The Berezhok is an upgraded version of the BMP-2 turret that retains the 30 mm 2A42 autocannon and a co-axial 7.62 mm machine gun, while adding a 30 mm AGS-30 automatic grenade launcher and four Kornet anti-tank guided missiles mounted in two launchers on either side of the turret, as well as a new fire-control system.
