Thales has been awarded a contract to supply a single Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) air-surveillance radar to Albania, with delivery expected within 14 months (August 2026), the company announced in a press release at the Paris Air Show 2025, held from 16 to 22 June.
The GM400α is a 3D air-surveillance radar with five times the data processing power of the Ground Master 400, and a range of up to 515 km, 10% more than the 400, according to Thales. It has an update rate of 6 seconds and an elevation coverage of up to 40°. The Alpha model has an upgraded processor and “advanced” detection algorithms, according to Janes C4ISR & Mission Systems: Land. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to detect and track high-, medium-, and low-flying targets including aircraft, missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). [...]
The contract has been dubbed “a big step forward” in Albania's efforts to modernise its air force by Albania's Defence Minister Pirro Vengu, according to a 19 June social media post. In May Albania and France signed an agreement for the purchase of an advanced mobile air-surveillance system, according to an Albanian Ministry of Defence (MoD) press release.
Albania is in the process of modernising its air force with considerable investments over the past few years. In February 2020 the MoD and Lockheed Martin signed an agreement on the maintenance and improvement of its integrated maritime-surveillance system.
Later that same year in November, the airspace-surveillance radar was activated in Mide, Pukë, in Albania's northern mountainous region. The radar system was purchased from Lockheed Martin in a USD22 million deal.
