Eine Einschätzung zur Lage im Sudan, die sich im Stillen (und wenig beachtet von der Weltöffentlichkeit und den Medien) von Tag zu Tag weiter desaströs entwickelt. Mittlerweile wird die Situation vor Ort als die schlimmste humanitäre Katastrophe der Gegenwart angesehen.

Current data shows that more than 24.6 million people are suffering hunger, of whom over 8.1 million are confronted with extreme food insecurity, including many with acute malnutrition. 573,000 people are on the verge of starvation. The Famine Review Committee said back in August that parts of North Darfur were experiencing the world’s first famine in seven years. It is profoundly shocking that the hunger crisis in the Sudan has spread even further since then. This disaster is entirely human-induced. The Famine Review Committee has for months pointed to two reasons for the famine: the ongoing fighting and the refusal of the parties to the conflict to allow humanitarian access. Both sides are using hunger as an instrument of war, accepting the possibility that many people might starve to death. [...]

We urgently appeal to the parties to the conflict, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), to allow comprehensive access for all humanitarian organisations at last, and to support and protect their life-saving work, rather than impeding or even preventing it altogether. We call on both sides to respect international humanitarian law and at long last to silence their weapons. That is the only way to end the famine in the Sudan.

Sudan risks becoming the world’s largest hunger crisis in recent history. [...] A protracted famine is taking hold and without humanitarian assistance, hundreds of thousands could die of hunger. Famine was first confirmed in August in North Darfur’s Zamzam camp and has since spread to four more areas. It is projected in five additional areas in Nnorth Darfur, between December and May 2025.

A total of 24.3 million people (around half the population) are acutely food insecure, while 638,000 (the highest anywhere in the world) face catastrophic levels of hunger. Over 1 in 3 children are facing acute malnutrition – above the 20 percent threshold for a famine confirmation. [...] WFP and partners urge the international community to prioritize funding for humanitarian efforts and to use diplomatic channels to secure a ceasefire and unrestricted access.

Derweilen haben die Behörden im Lande, wenn man sie so nennen kann, eine gewisse "Lösung" gefunden - sie stellten die Zusammenarbeit mit der UN im Kontext des Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)-Systems ein. Dieses System, das quasi eine Art Klassifikationsleiste für die Intensität einer Nahrungsmittel-Krise ist, wird somit nicht mehr bedient, d. h. aus den Augen, aus dem Sinn...

Sudan government rejects UN-backed famine declaration

The Sudanese government rejected on Sunday a report backed by the United Nations which determined that famine had spread to five areas of the war-torn country. [...]

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) review, which UN agencies use, said last week that the war between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces had created famine conditions for 638,000 people, with a further 8.1 million on the brink of mass starvation.

The army-aligned government "categorically rejects the IPC's description of the situation in Sudan as a famine", the foreign ministry said in a statement. The statement called the report "essentially speculative" and accused the IPC of procedural and transparency failings. [...]

The Sudanese government, loyal to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has been based in the Red Sea city of Port Sudan since the capital Khartoum became a warzone in April 2023. It has repeatedly been accused of stonewalling international efforts to assess the food security situation in the war-torn country.
