Ukraine Extends the Order for New Corvettes TurDef
Following the completion of the first corvette, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers has approved the acquisition of two more corvettes for the Ukrainian Navy.
Ukraine-based defence news site Militarnyi reported that the contracts for the two new corvettes will be signed between 2024 and 2026.
It is assumed that the two extra corvettes are MİLGEM corvettes, two of which have been launched. The ships will enter service as Hetman Ivan Mazepa (F-211) and Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi (F-212).
Ukraine's new MİLGEM corvettes will offer new capabilities for the Ukrainian Navy as the first modern full-sized surface combatants to enter service.
Eight anti-ship missiles will provide a longer reach in anti-surface warfare, as Ukraine's current platforms for performing this mission mainly consist of gunboats. Combining coastal Neptune AShMs and MİLGEM corvettes will give Ukraine greater firepower coverage and situational awareness in the Black Sea.
The air defence capability will consist of SMART-S Mk2 searching radar, MICA VL short to medium-range air defence missiles, and GÖKDENİZ-100/35SA CIWS.
More importantly, hull-mounted sonar and lightweight torpedoes will provide the Ukrainian Navy with modern Anti-Submarine Warfare capabilities. This is critical in the presence of the Russian Black Sea Fleet's considerable submarine inventory.
