The military museum on this tiny Taiwanese-held island barely a mile from Chinese territory celebrates a glorious victory over the communist forces sent to its shores to finish off the vanquished nationalist armies.
Its version of history describes fierce fighting in 1949 that saw the communists repulsed and their leaders convinced of the impossibility of taking Taiwan. More than 50 years later, a sober reassessment of the two sides' relative strengths is coming to the opposite conclusion.
China's obsession with Taiwan and the growing sophistication of its military will give it the potential to overwhelm the island within four years unless it embarks on its own rapid build-up, according to analysts and Taiwanese and US military reports.
