Die portugiesische Marine hat am 24.11. den Vertrag zur Anschaffung eines Mehrzweckschiffs mit der niederländischen Damen-Werftgruppe abgeschlossen (Link).

With financing from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), a new Portuguese Navy ship is expected to enter service in the second half of 2026.

It will be called "D. João II" - a multipurpose and innovative ship capable of carrying out emergency operations, surveillance, scientific and oceanographic research, environmental and meteorological monitoring.

With a total length of 107.6 meters, the "D.João II" will function as an aerial, terrestrial and underwater 'drone carrier', thus enhancing the capacity for monitoring and research in the ocean. This Multifunctional Naval Platform integrates cutting-edge technology and extends the functionalities of an ocean surveillance and oceanographic research vessel to other scenarios, namely emergency scenarios.

With accommodation capacity for a crew of 48 personnel, plus a further 42 berths for scientists and unmanned systems operators, the ship will also provide temporary accommodation for around 100 people.

Schwerpunkt der vorgesehenen Nutzung sind Ozeanographie und Umweltmonitoring, das Garagendeck bietet aber auch Platz für 20 20-Fuß-Container und 650 m2 für Fahrzeuge.
M.E. ein interessantes Konzept, aber in der vorliegenden Version definitiv keine Kampfeinheit.
