There was an account of a battle during the Korean war from the German magazine Speigel that was interestingly just posted in another forum today. It depicts a battle in which a Turkish unit was cut-off and surrounded by advancing Chinese troops. After 48 hours of vicious fighting, the Turkish troops, out of ammunition, placed their bayonets on their rifles and fought back the Chinese with knives and fists, and throwing rocks. A counter-attack by American tanks opened a corridor for which the Turkish troops could retreat, however the Turks had already gone on their own offensive. When the Turkish commander was given the order to fall-back he replied "Why?! We're killing them off one by one!"
During the Gallipoli (Gelibolu) campaign, while western Europe was fighting with mustard gas and other poisen weapons, a British officer in the Gallipoli front was asked why they were not fighting with gas masks? What if the Turks attacked with chemical weapons?? "Naw we know the Turks, they don't fight like that" was his answer. Even with Istanbul in immediate danger Gallipoli was the only front in which chemical weapons were not used. The Germans insisted on bringing in mustard gas but the Turks refused, choosing rather to fight hand-to-hand instead.
Legendary artilleryman Captain Mehmetoglu Seyit: during an artillery engagement with enemy ships, the cannon to which he was assigned to broke it's winch. In the heat of battle he lifted a 275 kg shell to the breach of the cannon which subsequently hit and heavily damaged the British naval ship Ocean.
