Kazakhstan protests: thousands detained as president says order mostly restored

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is due to address nation on Friday after days of protests saw dozens killed and a government resign. [...] Kazakhstan’s president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has claimed constitutional order has mostly been restored after days of deadly protests that saw 26 people “liquidated” and more than 3,000 detained, according to interior ministry figures.

Tokayev is due to address the nation on Friday, state media reported, after protests were sparked this week by a sudden rise in fuel prices combined with long-simmering frustrations over the political and economic situation in the country. [...] Witnesses in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, described scenes of chaos on Thursday, with government buildings being stormed or set on fire and widespread looting. Many of those demonstrating said the protests had begun peacefully earlier in the week, and turned violent after a heavy-handed government response. [...]

There were also reports of about 400 people in hospital. City officials in Almaty said 748 officers from police and the national guard had been injured and 18 killed, one of whom they claimed had been found beheaded. It was not immediately possible to verify the figures, but video footage showed violent clashes between protesters and authorities in a number of cities.

Nach allem, was man herausfiltern kann, war es wohl so, dass viele dieser Proteste vorgeblich wegen hoher Gas- und Spritpreise eskaliert sind und eher spontaner Natur waren. Sicherlich gärt es im Untergrund schon länger, aber die aktuellen Krawalle wirkend eher weniger organisiert, sondern affektiv. Vermutlich erklärt das dann auch, weswegen sie so schnell wieder niedergeschlagen werden konnten.

Ich denke eher nicht, dass es ein interner Machtkampf war, es wirkt zu unorganisiert und zugleich zu spontan.

Ansonsten aber denke ich auch, dass es über kurz oder lang eine Hinwendung zum Islam geben wird. Wobei: Das hat der gute alte Scholl-Latour schon vor 25 Jahren gesagt, dass Kasachstan ein Revival des Islam sehen wird. Allerdings wäre auch möglich, dass sich irgendwann eine Art Kadyrow-Ruhe dort einstellen wird...je nachdem, was Moskau will...

Islamisten, die sich als Demokraten tarnen? Sinn? Quelle? Naja, da haben sie sich gegenwärtig ja wenig bemüht und eher "völlig unauffällig" als teils gewalttätige Demonstranten getarnt.

Zumal sich Islamisten, man schaue sich z. B. Dagestan an, in Zentralasien nie als Demokraten getarnt hatten.

Obwohl - es gibt tatsächlich einen Islamisten, der sich als Demokrat "tarnt". Er wird von Moskau unterstützt und regiert in Tschetschenien...
