Sea transportability trials on Sydney Harbour in October represented the final activity in the two-year Risk Mitigation Activity (RMA) to choose Australia’s new Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV).

The RMA has seen the two contender vehicles, Hanwha Defense Australia’s Redback and Rheinmetall Defence Australia’s KF-41 LYNX, undergo extensive trials and evaluation in a range of environments.

The sea transportability trials, involving HMAS Adelaide, HMAS Choules and Navy landing craft, followed extensive testing on land at Puckapunyal, Victoria, and Cultana, South Australia.

LAND 400 Phase 3 will acquire up to 450 IFVs, replacing the M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) which dates back to the 1960s. At between $18.1 and $27.1 billion, the project is the biggest acquisition in the history of the Army, with Government consideration expected in 2022.
