Der Artikel sagt aus, das die chinesische Luftwaffe an der J-31 wenig Interesse habe.
Ich halte es daher für möglich, das man sich um einen Export der J-31 bemühen wird. Da käme auch eine verlängerte Variante - womöglich zur Schiffsbekämpfung optimiert - ins Spiel.
Potentielle Exportkunden gäbe es ja genug.

The criticism of J-31, China's second fifth-generation fighter jet, mainly stems from the dark exhaust emitting from the jet's engine, which indicates the engine's poor efficiency in burning fuel.

Meanwhile, PLA Navy Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong said in a speech in Xiamen on Nov. 17 that China's reverse engineering still has its limitations, and that it will take the country another few years to achieve a breakthrough in developing its own engines.

Zhang said the development of a jet engine involves mechanics and digital control, and the former is far more easy to master than the latter. "This part is too difficult and not something that can be achieved successly in a short time," he said.

Zhang also believes that the J-31 jet is too heavy.

nun gut, von Taiwan gesteuert - und als Testträger ist die Maschine untermotorisiert (und/oder zu schwer), vielleicht ist da die Maschine auch gar nicht mit "vollem power" geflogen, und hat als Testmaschine auch noch bewährte Triebwerke anstatt einer möglichen Neuentwicklung.
Wenn die J-31 mit einem neuen Triebwerk und deutlich besseren Leistungen ausgestattet (und auch noch leichter) wird, könnte sich die Einschätzung ändern.

Und Export-Chancen scheint das Flugzeug auch zu haben:

PAF wants to buy Chinese stealth aircraft: minister

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has expressed interest in procuring fourth generation stealth fighter aircraft FC-31 from China.

Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain told Dawn on Friday the matter was being discussed with Chinese authorities.

It is for the first time that a senior government functionary has confirmed talks with China over purchase of the longer-range stealth aircraft — an issue that has been a subject of speculation in defence circles since the 10th edition of the Zhuhai Air Show (China) held earlier this month, when the aircraft was unveiled.
