Libanon

By CREW | 19/11/2013

This morning’s terror attacks in Lebanon’s southern suburbs spawned questions about the culprits behind the bombings. Al Mayadeen TV said that security cameras showed the first suicide bomber charge the embassy on a motorcycle and blow himself up to clear the way for a second bomber, who detonated a car packed with explosives.

Following the attack, an unknown and shadowy Salafist by the name of Sirajuddin Zureiqat tweeted that the “Abdullah Azzam Brigades” had carried out the attacks. The ‘organization’ to which Zureiqat belongs to is known to have links with Salafists loyal to the Saudi regime and Al-Qaida. Zureiqat ironically stated that the “al-Hussein Brigades” were behind the terror attack. He confirmed the twin suicide bombers by referring to the bombers as ‘two heroes of Sunnis in Lebanon’.

As early as October 2012, Zureiqat was already identified as a prime suspect working to destabilize the political climate in Lebanon. Lebanese army intelligence had previously accused Zureiqat of “terrorist activities” and sought his arrest. He was taken into custody but released shortly afterwards by Lebanese authorities in that year.
