Tja, so schnell kann es gehen. Kaum drucksen die USA wegen der anhaltenden Armeerepression in Ägypten herum und kritisieren das Verhalten der Junta in Kairo, so springen flugs andere in die Bresche, namentlich die Russen. Wobei man anmerken muss, dass die Russen a) in Ägypten schon früher stark involviert waren (etwa auch beim Bau des Assuan-Dammes und bei der Ausstattung der Armee), allerdings dann unter Anwar al Sadat im Kontext von dessen Westorientierung in den frühen 1970ern rausgeschmissen wurden, und b) ihnen derweilen in Syrien ein immer weniger medial hofierbarer Verbündeter abhanden kommt (und sie indirekt auch schon eine Distanzierung zu diesem "durch die Blume" angekündigt haben).

Top Russian officials hold talks in Egypt

Top Russian and Egyptian ministers are holding talks in the Egyptian capital Cairo that will reportedly include possible arms deals that could be worth as much as $2 bn (£1.2 bn). [...] It follows the US' decision to cut defence aid to Egypt in response to the ousting of President Mohammed Morsi.

But Egypt's foreign minister, Nabil Fahmy insisted that he was not looking for a 'substitute for anyone'. The flagship of Russia's Pacific Naval Fleet, the cruiser Varyag, is on a six-day visit to Alexandria - the first Russian warship to visit Egypt since 1992.
