Government has passed tough new laws banning demonstrations in the capital Manama

Manama: Bahrain has tightened security around restive Shiite villages in an effort to block anti-government protests planned for Wednesday.
Bahrain has been buffeted by bouts of unrest since February 2011 when an uprising led by members of the Shiite majority called for the government to step down. The authorities stemmed the revolt but protests and clashes have persisted despite continuing talks between government and opposition, leaving Bahrain on the front line of a tussle for regional influence between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Watchdog claims journalists, photographers and bloggers arrested ahead of Bahrain rally

Dubai: Amnesty International Tuesday expressed fears that Bahraini autorities will used a recently-introduced legislation to legitimise the use of force to quash peaceful protests planned in the kingdom on Wednesday.
“The people of Bahrain have the right to express their views freely and to protest peacefully without the threat of violence,” said Philip Luther, Middle East and North Africa Director at Amnesty International.
