The Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) has released images of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operating from the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) missile frigate, the Zhoushan.
According to defence experts, the UAVs are probably the Austrian made Schiebel Camcopter S-100 drones, which were obtained by the PLAN in 2010. The S-100 is one of the few UAVs which can operate from a warship, which is made possible due to its light weight and portable design.
China had purchased a total of 18 S-100 UAVs from the Austrian defence manufacturer Schiebel two years ago.
