Iranian, Azerbaijani border guards clash, one killed
TEHRAN, July 5 (MNA) -- Iranian Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs Ali Abdollahi on Monday confirmed reports that a clash occurred between Iranian and Azerbaijani border guards on Sunday in which an Azerbaijani guard was killed.

“The clash happened after the border guards of the Republic of Azerbaijan illegally crossed into Iran and did not heed Iranian border guards’ order to stop,” Abdollahi stated.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast also confirmed on Tuesday that “the border guards of the Republic of Azerbaijan entered Iran, perhaps inadvertently, and ignored the Iranian guards’ order (to stop)” which led to a clash, in which “a number of people were wounded and an Azerbaijani guard was killed.”

The diplomatic apparatus of both countries are investigating the incident, he added.

Shooting on Azerbaijan-Iran border leaves one border guard dead

Armed persons attempted to violate the border from the direction of the Islamic Republic of Iran, outside the Arvana village service area border post in the Yardimli region. The incident occurred at 13:15 on July 3, the State Border Service told Trend. A firearm was suddenly used against the border squad. As a result of the armed incident the Squad Head Lieutenant Rufat Guliyev was fatally wounded and died while being evacuated to the border post.

As the border guards prevented the intended violation of the state border, the armed assailants escaped to Iran.

Azerbaijan`s Prime Minister Artur Rasizade met with chairman of Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani.

Following the one-on-one meeting, the sides met in the presence of their delegations. Rasizade praised the level of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including political, economic, cultural and humanitarian ones.

The Primier also hailed the activity of an intergovernmental commission. Touching upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Rasizade thanked Iranian government for backing Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity. Larijani, in turn, praised Iran-Azerbaijan relations, and stressed the importance of developing the existing ties. He stressed “Iran will always back Azerbaijan on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh”.

A meeting of members of an Azerbaijan-Iran interparliamentary friendship group took place Friday at Azerbaijan`s Milli Majlis.
