Up to 2,000 protesters gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo yesterday as Israeli warplanes and tanks hammered neighbouring Gaza. The mostly youthful crowd waved Palestinian and Egyptian flags and chanted: “The people demand the liberation of Palestine.”

Protesters who spoke to AFP said the demonstration was in response to the Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip. Egypt, ruled by a military council since protests ousted former president Hosni Mubarak in February, has uneasy diplomatic ties with Israel that have come under increased scrutiny in the country since the revolt.
