Up to 2,000 protesters gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo yesterday as Israeli warplanes and tanks hammered neighbouring Gaza. The mostly youthful crowd waved Palestinian and Egyptian flags and chanted: “The people demand the liberation of Palestine.”
Protesters who spoke to AFP said the demonstration was in response to the Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip. Egypt, ruled by a military council since protests ousted former president Hosni Mubarak in February, has uneasy diplomatic ties with Israel that have come under increased scrutiny in the country since the revolt.

About 3,000 Egyptians gathered on Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square, demanding the prosecution of ousted president Hosni Mubarak and officials of his administration.
The crowd chanted "The people want to try the deposed president" as protesters arrived in the square after Friday prayers.
