Official Warns Europe about Increasing Drug Production in Afghanistan

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian judiciary official on Sunday warned the western world, specially European states, about the devastating outcomes of the ongoing growth in the production of illicit drugs in Afghanistan.

"Today, the issue of illicit drugs is considered as a threat to humanity…the European countries should not imagine that Iran is the sole victim of narcotics," Deputy Head of Iran's Judiciary Seyed Ebrahim Rayisee told reporters.

Iran alone makes 85 percent of the world's total opium seizures. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iranian police have lost more than 3500 of their personnel in the country's combat against narcotics.

The crackdown has cost Iran 600 million dollars over the past two years. Strategies pursued by Tehran include digging canals, building barriers and installing barbed wire to seal the country's borders, specially in the East.
