Turkey to buy Saudi C-130 cargo planes

Turkish Air Force is preparing to purchase C-130 Hercules transport aircraft from Saudi Arabia.

As a result of close cooperation between the Turkish Air Force Command (HvKK) and Turkey’s Undersecreteriat for Defense Industries (SSM), a total of six C-130E extended-range Hercules cargo transport aircraft are to be purchased from the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) stock that were put on sale on a best-offer basis. Turkey has proposed the most attractive bid by agreeing to pay about $4.4 million per plane on a deal that’s valued $26.3 million. Aircraft manufacturing powerhouse TAI, or Turkish Aerospace Industries A.S., has been commisioned to receive and service the planes to suit Turkish Air Force (TurAF) needs.

SSM and HvKK are hoping to finalize the deal with Saudi Arabia and bring the planes to Turkey by the end of November.

With the addition of six C-130E planes, TurAF will increase its extended range long haul fleet to a total of nineteen aircraft. Other planes of the same category include six C-130Bs and seven C-130Es. This purchase will greatly help Turkey offset some of the negative impacts the country is experiencing from the long delayed Airbus A400M project, which Turkey is a partner to with ten new planes on order.

C-130 Hercules is deemed to be one of the most successful transport aircraft in the history of military aviation and used by more than fifty NATO and allied air forces around the world. Total flight hours for the aircraft exceed 22 million. The very first Lockeed Martin-built C-130 of the TurAF was brought to Turkey in September 16th, 1964 and beared the tail number 63-13186.

ANKARA, Turkey – U.S. helicopter maker Sikorsky Aircraft won a Turkish contract worth $3.5 billion (2.4 billion euros) on Thursday and the two will now fine tune the final elements of the deal, the defense minister said.

Turkey is expanding its helicopter fleet with attack and utility helicopters, which it uses in battles against autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebels in the rugged southeast.

Die Maschinen der Marke T-70 Blackhawk werden im Betrieb Turkish Aerospace Industry (TAI) in Ankara montiert. Die Hubschrauber sind für die Beförderung von Armeepersonal und Militärgütern bestimmt.

Es ist zwar nicht die aktuellste Meldung, die türkischen Streitkräfte haben eine Bodengestützte Version der eigenentwickelten Abstandswaffe SOM eingeführt, die Ziele in 200 km Entfernung bekämpfen kann. Die Landstreitkräfte verfügen damit über die Fähigkeit strategische Ziele hinter der Frontlinie zu bekämpfen.

Turkey has successfully completed development of a ground-to-ground missile with a range of 200 kilometers that has now entered the Army inventory, said Nihat Ergun, the country’s science, industry and technology minister.
“Tubitak [Turkish scientific research organization)] has completed the 200-kilometer stand-off munitions [testing], and the system has entered the inventory of the Army,” Ergun told reporters.
“Now, the next target is 500 kilometers,” he said. “We have the technology to develop this missile. It finds the target making use of the GPS technology and ground maps.”
Tubitak officials said earlier this year that the country’s High Board of Technology was developing capabilities in this area following a request from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In addition to hosting a NATO radar to detect an
early launch of long-range missiles by a rogue state, Turkey seems committed to boosting its local missile-related industry.

Intel agency eyes surface-to-air missiles in region

NATO deployed Patriots in southern Turkey against a possible missile attack from Syria. MİT ‘observes’ missile movements in the region thanks to GES.

The General Staff Electronic Systems Command (GES) is providing observations of regional countries as well as missile movements in the region, officials from National Intelligence Organization (MİT) recently told a parliamentary commission.

MİT took over facilities of the (GES) 20 kilometers south of Ankara, in the Gölbaşı district, from the General Staff on Jan. 1, 2012. When the presentation of three senior officials from MİT which was made last week to Parliament’s Eavesdropping Examination Commission behind the closed doors, the institution found an opportunity to explain the functions and abilities of the system at length, as well as their proficiency in using these functions and abilities. At the time, the take-over of the system led to intense political discussions concerning the balance of power between different components of governance.
