Libya’s internationally recognised government has begun using Turkish drones to strike people-smuggling networks.
Strikes were carried out on Wednesday in the northwestern coastal cities of Sabratha and Zwara, the Government of National Unity (GNU) announced.
The strikes were “part of a systematic security campaign and comprehensive strategic plan aimed at intensifying operations to degrade and dismantle the criminal gangs and networks trafficking in human lives and people-smuggling into Europe,” Abdulsalam Al-Zoubi, the GNU’s deputy defence minister, said on Thursday.
“These operations, which included the inaugural use of UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles], demonstrate the determination and zero-tolerance approach of the GNU in tackling these criminal networks and disrupting their illegal activity.”
A source within the GNU told Middle East Eye that the drones were “Turkish UAVs owned and operated by the Libyan Ministry of Defence”.

Zitat:Haftar demands a billion euros to support Greek positions in Eastern Mediterranean
by AbdulkaderAssadSun, 09/11/2025 - 19:02
Greek press reported that the so-called General Command affiliated with Khalifa Haftar demanded to receive one billion euros annually in exchange for supporting Greek positions, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean.
According to the report, this demand came from the “Benghazi government” during the recent visit of Haftar’s son, Khaled, who headed a 20-member delegation to the Greek capital, Athens.
The delegation met, among others, with Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, General Konstantinos Floros, and discussed issues of military cooperation.
A senior Greek government source told the newspaper that mentioning specific amounts or payment periods was avoided, while confirming that “Benghazi is asking us for enormous sums of money.”
It appears that the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly rejects this demand, as reflected in the recommendations made on the matter. Aides to Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said: “There is no end to this. It is a traditional form of blackmail. Regardless of the amount we might pay, Turkey can always pay one euro more. Therefore, it makes no sense to engage in such discussions for several reasons.”
The report noted that the Benghazi side is keen not to sever its relations with Athens, fearing that any ratification of the Turkey–Libya memorandum would be viewed by the Greek government as a directly hostile act. It added that Haftar seeks to maximize his political and financial gains to strengthen his influence in Libya, noting that he does not trust any party, especially Turkey.
Greek government sources confirmed that Athens has a comprehensive plan for its relations with Libya, benefiting from being the only country that maintains communication with all Libyan parties at various levels, making it a bridge for rapprochement with the European Union.

Turkey
Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, confirmed that his country is continuing its efforts to turn oil and natural gas exploration and production activities into tangible projects in a number of countries, including Libya, Bulgaria, Romania, Oman, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, and Niger.
Speaking to the Turkish Anadolu Agency, Bayraktar explained that Turkey aims to strengthen its presence in the fields of energy and mining beyond its borders, in a way that contributes to reducing the current account deficit and dependence on imports.
During a meeting held on the sidelines of the Gastech 2025 conference in Milan, Italy, Bayraktar discussed with Libya’s Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdulsadek, ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sectors.
According to Libya’s Ministry of Oil, the two sides discussed exploration programs in onshore and offshore areas, the rehabilitation and development of oilfields, and the participation of Turkish companies in hydrocarbon projects and infrastructure development for Libya’s energy sector.
