Finland Buys Israel’s David’s Sling For Huge Air Defense Upgrade

David’s Sling is a huge upgrade for Finland’s air defenses and will protect the country from ballistic and other high-speed missiles. [...]

NATO’s newest member, Finland, announced Wednesday it will procure the David’s Sling medium-range air defense system from Israel. This is the first export customer for the system. Israel’s Defense Ministry signed an agreement for the sale of the David’s Sling air defense system to Finland on Sunday, in a first-of-its-kind deal estimated at 317 million euros (NIS 1.3 billion).

The deal was hailed by Director General Eyal Zamir as a “historic agreement” and was signed at an event attended by Finland’s Ambassador to Israel Nina Nordström and Finnish Defense Attaché to Israel Col. Oula Asteljoki.

The gun is mounted at the rear if the truck, a spade being lowered before firing, which brings most of the recoil forces into the ground. It takes around 90 seconds to fir the first round since the ARVE has stopped, the laying system being manual. The elevation angle is comprised between -3° and +60°, loading being manual with flick rammer. Maximum rate of fire is eight rounds per minute, with three rounds in the first 15 seconds, while sustained fire rate is two rounds per minute, the crew being made of six personnel.

Rounds are contained in boxes located alongside the truck, a total of 24 complete ammunition being carried. With standard ammunition maximum range is 40 km. The elevation arc of the gun goes from -3° to +60°; in indirect fire mode, with elevation between +12° and +60°, the ARVE can shoot in the -90°/+50° sector, while in direct fire mod that sector becomes -90°/+50°. Once the fire action is finished, the self-propelled gun leaves the place in around 45 seconds.

The artillery system is installed on a Sisu E13TP 8×8 truck, the whole complex being 11.5 metres long, 2.6 metres wide and 3.5 metres high, maximum combat mass being less than 28 tonnes. Powered by a 500 hp engine, it can reach a maximum speed on road of over 100 km/h and has a cruising range of over 600 km, its tank containing 400 litres of fuel. Mobility wise, it can climb a 30° (57.7%) and ford a 1-metre-deep water obstacle.

Was sie im Text nicht erwähnen: gerüchteweise soll das System extrem günstig sein. Davon könnte man also größere Mengen vorhalten. Mit entsprechender Munition hätte man damit zudem eine deutlich größere Reichweite als jede russische Rohrartilerie, womit die ungeschützte Auslegung auf Lkw weniger problematisch ist.

Das sind aber soweit ich weiß einfach nur die alten gezogenen Haubitzen der Finnen auf einem Lkw verbaut. Die Stückzahl ist also begrenzt, da die Waffenanlage wohl nicht mehr gebaut wird.

Außerdem sehr personalintensiv.
