Zunächst sollen neun Maschinen gebaut werden. Tejas war als Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) von der indischen Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) komplett eigenständig und daher sehr langwierig (offizieller Programmstart schon 1983; Erstflug 2001) zunächst nur für die indische Luftwaffe entwickelt worden. Schon 2003 hatte die Regierung aber auch eine Marinevariante bewilligt. Die Marine-Tejas sollen veraltete trägergestützte Kampfflugzeuge Sea Harrier ersetzen und vor allem vom derzeit in Eigenentwicklung gebauten neuen Flugzeugträger VIKRANT operieren. Das „weitweit einzige trägergestützte leichte Kampfflugzeug“ (O-Ton Indien) soll ein breites Spektrum von Einsatzoptionen abdecken. Als Bewaffnung werden neben Seeziel-FK, Bomben und Bordkanone auch neuartige Flugkörper großer Reichweite (BVR - Beyond Visual Range) genannt. Als so genanntes STOBAR-Flugzeug startet Tejas über eine Bugrampe (STO - Short Take-off) und wird bei der Landung in einer Fanganlage (BAR - Barrier Arrested Recovery) abgebremst.

Die Luftwaffenvariante von Tejas soll mit etwas Verzögerung Anfang 2013 den Dienst bei der Truppe antreten (etwa 140 Flugzeuge sind wohl auch schon bestellt); die Marineversion dann spätestens 2015 offiziell eingeführt werden. Dahinter steht natürlich die Absicht, die Flugzeuge parallel zur Fertigstellung des Flugzeugträgereigenbaus VIKRANT (geplant in 2014) verfügbar zu machen. Allerdings gibt es durchaus noch Probleme. Zwar soll ja nun die begrenzte Serienfertigung anlaufen, aber das derzeit in Tejas eingebaute Triebwerk (General Electric GE F404) soll angeblich die von der Marine für einen Start mit voller Waffenzuladung über die Bugrampe geforderte Leistung nicht liefern. Offenbar überlegt man einen Wechsel zu leistungsstärkeren Triebwerken GE F414. Endgültigen Aufschluss soll aber erst etwa einjähriger praktischer Flugbetrieb mit den nun bewilligten Vorserienflugzeugen geben. Danach „in etwa drei bis vier Jahren“ soll dann die endgültige operative Freigabe erfolgen und die volle Serienfertigung anlaufen. Unklar ist, ob eine mögliche Umrüstung auf ein anderes Triebwerk hier zu Verzögerungen führen könnte.

Tejas steht übrigens nicht in Konkurrenz zu den in Russland bestellten Trägerkampfflugzeugen Mig-29 Fulcrum-D.

The naval version of the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA-Navy) has not been able to obtain the certification needed to make its debut flight because of structural issues. DRDO working out modalities with various organisations for rectifying deficiencies by suitable modifications to the engine/airframe design.
(rmks: ... and just recently the Defence Acquisition Council had authorized limited series production).
