090603b The Hellenic Defense site reports that the Turkish Defense R&D Institute (SAGE) has unveiled a wholly made-in-Turkey tail-mounted guidance kit for unguided bombs, very similar to the US JDAM family. The kit, called HGK (Hassas Gudum Kiti) is initially designed for Mk84 bombs, but a version for Mk82 is reportedly under development.

(ANSAmed) - ANKARA, AUGUST 13 - The head of the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), Murad Bayar, said in Ankara that the tender process for the procurement of some 121 helicopters for the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) would be finalized by the end of October, daily Today's Zaman reported. Speaking to reporters, Bayar said the SSM will accept bids for the tender until the end of September and make a final decision by the end of the following month. Italian defense electronics group Finmeccanicàs AgustaWestland company and the US-based United Technologies Corporation's Sikorsky Aircraft company are the two firms that have submitted bids thus far.

Washington (Reuters) - Die USA wollen der Türkei Waffen im Wert von bis zu 7,8 Milliarden Dollar verkaufen.

Die Regierung informierte den Kongress am Freitag über Pläne zur Veräußerung von mehreren Einheiten des Raketenabwehrsystems "Patriot". Nach Angaben des Verteidigungsministeriums sind darin unter anderem 13 Abschussvorrichtungen und 72 Raketen enthalten. Hauptpartner auf Unternehmensseite seien die Rüstungskonzerne Raytheon und Lockheed Martin. Die Türkei reagiere damit auf Bedrohungen in der Region, hieß es weiter.

The test flights of Turkey's national attack helicopters, which will be produced jointly with Italy, were concluded on September 28, producing satisfactory results for Turkish defense officials.

Following a decade of discussions on developing a combat helicopter program, Turkey awarded the bid to produce combat and reconnaissance helicopters to the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) -the prime contractor- and the Italian AgustaWestland -the subcontractor- in 2007. Under the $3 billion program, 51 (plus 40 optional) helicopters will be produced for the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). AgustaWestland agreed to transfer technology for the development of Turkey's T-129 ATAK, which will be an improvised version of its A-129 helicopters to meet the Turkish army's specific needs to operate in high altitude mountainous terrain. The first T-129's are scheduled to be delivered to the TSK in 2013 (EDM, June 27, 2008, Today's Zaman, September 29).

Turkey launched the acquisition of four (!) Aircraft electronic warfare (EW) with the winner of the competition be announced probably in the spring of 2010.

The total value of the program is estimated to be 450-600 million dollars depending on the configuration. The winner of the program will work with the Turkish electronics company Aselsan.

The system once developed, installed and completed in four aircraft platforms. To obtain these aircraft will take the second contest, which will submit proposals that companies Antonov, Bombardier, Dassault, Embraer, Gulfstream, and Raytheon.

ANKARA - Turkish procurement officials Dec. 17 welcomed the U.S. administration's decision to sell 14 CH-47F Chinook heavy lift helicopters to the Turkish Army.

"This deal will greatly boost our military transport capabilities," one official said.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the Pentagon office that coordinates weapons sales, last week notified Congress of the potential sale.

"The government of Turkey has requested a possible sale of 14 CH-47F Chinook helicopters, 32 T55-GA-714A turbine engines, 28 AN/ARC-201E Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems, 14 AN/APR-39A(V)1 Radar Signal Detecting Sets, support equipment, special tools and test equipment, spare and repair parts, publications and technical documentation, site survey, personnel training and training equipment, ferry services, U.S. government and contractor technical and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support," the DSCA said.

Turkish and Syrian soldiers will hold joint drills this week to enhance border security cooperation, the Turkish General Staff said Monday.

The announcement came as yet another sign of the flourishing ties between the two neighbors who came to the brink of war in the late 1990s after decades of hostility.

The three-day exercises, starting Tuesday at two border outposts on the Turkish side of the frontier, aim to “boost cooperation and confidence between the land forces of the two countries and raise border units’ level of training and ability to work together,” the statement said.

Turkey has significantly improved ties with Syria in recent years, much to the annoyance of Israel, its once close ally with whom relations have badly deteriorated.

The Syrian and Turkish militaries held joint exercises in April last year, stirring criticism from Tel Aviv.

In 1998, Ankara threatened military action if Damascus continued to shelter Abdullah Öcalan, leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
