Turkish MoD Expresses Plans for Hypersonic Weaponry TurDef
Turkiye wants to reach hypersonic technology, Turkish Defence Ministry sources stated. This statement follows Erdoğan’s agreement to increase defence budget.

Recently, Iran hit Tel Aviv with hypersonic missiles, a city protected by Israel’s various anti-ballistic missile systems (Arrow 2, MIM-104 Patriot, David’s Sling...). This opens a new era in defence as it proves two things: Iran, a country under heavy U.S. sanctions, can reach it, so others have no excuse. A hypersonic missile is translated as a vulnerability to the other side, as the defence umbrella fails to protect.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared that Turkiye will increase its defence spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP) during the next ten years in accordance with NATO’s decision. Turkish MoD sources recently admitted that Turkiye aims to expand a layered air and missile defence network nationwide under the Çelik Kubbe (Steel Dome) concept. The source has not explicitly cited hypersonic threats, but the context makes their inclusion almost certain as it was stated after Iran’s hypersonic missiles hit Israeli cities.

On the other hand, MoD sources stated that Turkiye is investing in hypersonic, ballistic, and cruise missile systems. This means not only defence but also deterrence is being emphasised.

There are various ways to achieve hypersonic missile capabilities, and it is important to know which are closer to Turkiye on technological terms. In fact knowledge on one side gives advantage on other side too.

ROKETSAN Teases Second Missile to be Debuted in IDEF25 TurDef
On the countdown to IDEF25 international defence exhibition to be held in Istanbul, ROKETSAN teased another new missile that appears to use a ramjet engine.

ROKETSAN shared the missile partially with the statement “High precision beyond visual range”. Previously, another missile that appears to be a new ballistic missile or guided artillery rocket was teased.

The missile shown partially has two air intakes, which suggests it is using ramjet propulsion. Additionally, the folding fins can be seen clearly in the video, suggesting it is launched from a canister. Surface launch requires a booster, especially for ramjets, which need supersonic speeds to start up.

ROKETSAN Shares Multi-Purpose Munition Before IDEF25 TurDef
Before the IDEF25 defence exhibition, ROKETSAN gave a peek into a rather unique looking munition described as being multi-purpose and having high speed.

The upcoming multi-purpose munition appears to have a turbojet engine as seen from the nozzle and inlets. Additionally, the optical seeker (Unknown if TV or IIR) is also seen from the teaser.

The details and ROKETSAN’s description hint at a jet-powered loitering munition that can be launched like a missile from surface or air platforms and engage both surface and air targets using the optical seeker.

A similar work to this prediction is the Coyote Block 2 of Raytheon, which is also powered by a small turbojet engine and is intended for use against UAVs. However, it should be noted that Coyote Block 2 uses a mmWR seeker instead of an optical one.

It is known from the previous teasers that ROKETSAN will also unveil an artillery rocket or ballistic missile, which appears to be an aeroballistic missile, a ramjet-powered missile, and an underwater launch capsule.

Türkiye is set to present its most advanced ballistic missile yet at the IDEF 2025 defence industry exhibition in Istanbul, signalling a major development in the country’s strategic strike capabilities. The TAYFUN missile, domestically developed by Roketsan, will be publicly displayed for the first time during the event, which runs from 22 to 27 July at the Istanbul Exhibition Center.

Described as Türkiye’s longest-range missile to date, TAYFUN has a stated range of 500 to 800 kilometres, with future versions aiming to exceed 1,000 kilometres. The missile has been engineered for high precision, reportedly capable of striking targets within a margin of approximately five metres, including moving naval assets at sea.

The system is mobile-launched, allowing for rapid relocation and quick deployment, features that increase its survivability in contested environments. Turkish defence analysts note that TAYFUN is hypersonic, resistant to jamming, and difficult for adversaries to intercept, underlining Ankara’s continued focus on indigenous defence technologies.

IDEF25: TAYFUN Block 4 Packs a Bigger Punch with More Reach Turdef

ROKETSAN has revealed the TAYFUN Block 4 ballistic missile with hypersonic speed and more size to carry a larger warhead and reach longer ranges during IDEF25.
The new variant of TAYFUN, measuring 10 m in length and 938 mm in diameter, is far larger than the baseline variant, with 6.5 m in length and 610 mm in diameter. With this size, it is also the heaviest at a weight of 7200 kg, whereas the baseline variant weighs 2100 kg.
While the range has not been discussed on any ground, it is obvious that a missile of this size will have a longer range.

Turkish defense contractor Roketsan has rolled out a substantially larger version of its Tayfun short-range ballistic missile. In addition to the new capabilities it could offer Turkey, the Tayfun Block 4 is another indication of a broader resurgence of interest in larger and longer-ranged ballistic missiles, especially within the U.S. military.

Roketsan unveiled the Tayfun Block 4 at the 2025 International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) in Istanbul last week. The Tayfun family first broke cover in 2022, and the weapon reportedly evolved from Rokestan’s preceding Bora short-range ballistic missile. Tayfun and Bora mean typhoon and storm in Turkish, respectively.

Tayfun Block 4 is close to 33 feet (10 meters) long, just over 3 feet (close to one meter) wide, and has a total weight of nearly eight tons (7,200 kilograms), according to Janes. Existing specifications for Tayfun (no block specified) on Roketsan’s website describe a missile that has an overall length of just over 21 feet (6.5 meters), a diameter of around two feet (just over 0.6 meters), and a gross weight of some two and a half tons (2,300 kilograms).

“The Tayfun Block-4 achieves long ranges, setting another record for the Turkish defense industry,” Rokestan said in a statement, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency news outlet. It “will be capable of destroying numerous strategic targets, such as air defense systems, command and control centers, military hangars, and critical military facilities…”

Roketsan has not disclosed an official maximum range for Tayfun Block 4, but its substantially larger size has prompted speculation that it may be in the medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) category. MRBMs are categorized as ballistic missiles with maximum ranges between 620 and 1,860 miles (1,000 and 3,000 kilometers), while short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) can reach out to between 190 and 620 miles (300 and 1,000 kilometers). The stated range of Tayfun provided on Roketsan’s website is greater than 174 miles (280 kilometers). Previous versions of Tayfun have reportedly demonstrated the ability to hit targets nearly 350 miles (561 kilometers) away.
