Achievements and Transformations in Turkish Defence 2023
TurDef reviews the noteworthy developments that have shaped the Turkish defence and aerospace industries in 2023.
By Özgür Ekşi
From political dynamics to strategic acquisitions and groundbreaking technological advancements, the Turkish Defence and Defence Industry have experienced significant developments.
Our news statistics reveal the trend - most news articles peaked in April, May, and July. The surge in April and May aligns with the general election on May 14th, indicating a correlation between defence and politics. In July, we witnessed another peak during the IDEF 23 Expo. Significantly, the momentum did not wane post-election and expo, underscoring the continued interest in Turkish Defence developments.
The year brought forth significant developments in Turkiye’s foreign relations, particularly in the defence industry. Turkiye and the United Kingdom forged stronger ties, while Finland’s admission to NATO and Sweden standing by underscored the nation’s strategic positioning. Turkiye’s pursuit of British products and contemplation of acquiring Swedish ones reflect a nuanced approach to building a diversified defence portfolio.
National Emphasis: Turkish Products at the Forefront
While Turkiye emphasises the importance of national and indigenous products, strategic decisions sometimes require interim measures. Discussions about acquiring Type-23 frigates, C-130-J Hercules aircraft from the U.K., negotiations with the U.S. for F-16s, and Eurofighter talks with the U.K. showcase the intricate strategies.

The first quantum integrated circuits were produced at KUANTAL, the research laboratory established at ASELSAN to carry out studies in the field of Quantum Technologies. Announcing the development in question through the official X account, ASELSAN General Manager Ahmet AKYOL used the following statements:
We produced the first quantum integrated circuits in our Research Laboratory KUANTAL. Our quantum research will add advanced technologies to sensors and devices in existing products. We will transform our country’s knowledge in quantum technologies into national systems.
KUANTAL (Quantum Research Laboratory) was established at ASELSAN to carry out studies in the field of Quantum Technologies. With the projects to be carried out in the laboratory established on the TOBB University of Economics and Technology (ETÜ) campus, it is aimed to increase Turkey’s knowledge and technology readiness level in quantum technologies and transform them into local and national systems through ASELSAN. In terms of the experimental capabilities and research opportunities that the laboratory will have, it is aimed to be one of the few research laboratories in our country’s industry and in the world. It is planned to carry out high-impact research and prototype development activities with the academic collaborations of our Research Centers.

The MURAD AESA Radar developed by ASELSAN was integrated into the AKINCI Armed UAV and an unnamed jet aircraft. Flying tests are expected to gain momentum in 2024.
Work continues on the MURAD AESA Radar, which has been under development for platforms such as AKINCI Armed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and F-16 for some time. The radar, which was developed with national facilities, was integrated into AKINCI UAV and an unnamed jet platform.
Following optimization studies, flight tests of the MURAD AESA Radar are expected to be rapidly in 2024. It is emphasized that the experience to be gained in this field is also critical for platforms such as KIZILELMA, KAAN, HÜRJET, and ANKA-3.
Das Murad AESA Radar von Aselsan ist bereits erfolgreich in der Akinci Drohne und in einer unbekannten Jet betriebenen Drohne. Die Fähigkeiten des Radars sind in dem Artikel aufgeführt.

Serial Production of Land Missile Systems Begins
The “Land Missile Systems Signing Ceremony” for serial production of TAYFUN, SUNGUR, TRG-230 and SUNGUR was held at the Defence Industry Agency.
“Land Missile Systems Signing Ceremony” was held at the Defence Industry Agency (SSB) on February 2, 2024, with the participation of Minister of National Defence Yaşar Güler, Chief of General Staff General Metin Gürak and Commander of the Land Forces General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu.
President of SSB Professor Haluk Görgün shared a video of the ceremony on social media.
Minister of Defence Güler stated that he has full faith that the systems of different diameters and features produced within the scope of the agreements will meet the army’s needs and increase its operations, facilities and capabilities. Güler emphasized how critical and necessary the systems they added to the army’s inventory have come to the fore in recent days, where defence and security issues have become more critical with each passing year, and said, “While we are proactively taking all kinds of measures for the security and peace of our country and our noble nation, We see our local and national defence industry as an integral part of our survival.”

Noch eine Anmerkung zur Tayfun:
Zitat:An interesting point about the Tayfun is that it may be, optimized to hit naval vessels. Several years ago, Turkish defence officials had stated that a second iteration of the Bora was being developed. It was said that the Bora II would not only have a range in excess of 500 km, but would also be capable of striking ships. It is almost certain that “Tayfun” is the new name for the Bora II and that the name which is the Turkish translation of “typhoon” is in reference to its naval attack capabilities.
As the Tayfun has only been officially revealed today, it will continue to be shrouded in mystery for a while. Though it can be speculated that it will have mid-course maneuvering and a quasi-ballistic trajectory similar to the Bora, with a much higher terminal speed. As a strategic weapon, it is unlikely that specifications and capabilities will be fully released to the public.

ASELSAN’s combined gun and missile-based mobile solution for low-altitude air defence, GÜRZ, has joined the World Defense Show exhibition in Saudi Arabia.
GÜRZ made its debut in the IDEF’23 exhibition organised in Istanbul, Turkiye. The air defence system was first seen on the Turkish patent platform Türk Patent, nicknamed “Turkish Pantsir” by Russian social media users who shared it.
The system was later called “Hybrid” during a presentation of ASELSAN, showing existing and future systems in a layered manner.
