The United States and NATO allies have completed the multinational exercise Northern Viking 2022 in Keflavik, Iceland. [...]
Out at sea, French, German and Norwegian surface combatants were joined by American and German maritime patrol aircraft in a hunt for adversary submarines while small boats from Arlington and Icelandic vessels conducted visit, board, search and seizure missions on suspect vessels.
Back on land, near Keflavík Air Base, an Icelandic Coast Guard rescue helicopter transported trapped and injured citizens to a temporary medical facility staffed by members of 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Shock Trauma Platoon and host nation medical personnel for triage and treatment. [...] The exercise, which began April 2 and concluded April 14, initially focused on protecting the critical infrastructure of Keflavík Air Base. Exercise participants established temporary secondary refueling positions for Allied aircraft while working to neutralize security threats to the base and its personnel. [...]

Northern Viking 22, led by the U.S. Sixth Fleet as a maritime-focused event for the first time in decades, established a framework for future iterations of the Northern Viking exercise. As units and personnel depart Iceland for their own national taskings and future missions, the planning cycle for Northern Viking 24 is right around the corner. With lessons learned and invaluable training experiences and opportunities to look back on, exercise planners look forward to building on the successes of Northern Viking 22.

Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt, eingeschränkte Sicht, stürmische See – die Fregatte „Sachsen“ reitet durch meterhohe Wellen des Nordatlantiks. Ein feindliches Unterseeboot bedroht die Versorgung Islands. NATO-Schiffe sollen die Seewege freihalten.
„An alle Stellen!“, schallt es aus der Schiffslautsprecheranlage der „Sachsen“. „Wir haben ein U-Boot in Peilung Zwo-Sechs-Fünf und Abstand 22 nautische Meilen durch den deutschen Seefernaufklärer P-3C Orion gemeldet bekommen. Dazu: Besatzung auf Gefechtsstation!“ Das Klingelsignal für den Gefechtsalarm ertönt, die Besatzung zieht sich zusätzlich zum Bordanzug Flammschutz und Schwimmweste an. Und alle setzen die Gefechtshelme auf.
Ziel der Übung: das feindliche U-Boot bekämpfen, um die Sicherheit der Seewege nach Island wiederherzustellen. Zusammen mit dem französischen Zerstörer „Latouche-Tréville“ und der norwegischen Fregatte „Thor Heyerdahl“ verfolgt das deutsche Schiff das U-Boot. Schlussendlich wird es gemeinsam simuliert bekämpft. [...] „Island kommt beim Schutz der Seeverbindungslinien zwischen Europa und Nordamerika eine entscheidende Rolle zu“, erklärt Fregattenkapitän Philipp Vögtle, Kommandant der Fregatte „Sachsen“. „Daher sind multinationale Übungen in diesem Seegebiet für meine Besatzung und mich eine hervorragende Gelegenheit, uns mit den geographischen Gegebenheiten dieses Operationsgebiets vertraut zu machen.“ [...]
Am 14. April ist die „Sachsen“ von Northern Viking in ihren Heimathafen zurückgekehrt. Bevor die Besatzung wieder in See stechen und im Juni am Großmanöver BALTOPS teilnehmen wird, werden die Männer und Frauen Ostern zuhause verbringen.
