Turkiye Withdrew From the CFE
The decision was published in the Official Gazette. Turkiye withdrew from the CFE, signed in Paris in 1990 and signed by NATO and the Soviet Union, which imposed restrictions on the movements and equipment of the armed forces in Europe during the Cold War. The Treaty was signed by some countries, especially Russia, at the OSCE Summit in Istanbul in 1999. Russia officially announced its withdrawal from CFE in November 2023. Thereupon, the U.S. and NATO announced that they were suspending their obligations. Türkiye, on the other hand, regretted the U.S. decision and called on the parties to return to the agreement. Türkiye also withdrew from the Treaty following the recently increasing tension. The relevant Presidential Decree was published in the 5 April issue of the Official Gazette, effective 8 April. The Treaty set equal maximum limits for each bloc on key armaments essential for conducting surprise attacks and initiating large-scale offensive operations.

F-16 ÖZGÜR Drops LGK-82 and LGK-84 Bombs
A Turkish F-16 fighter with ÖZGÜR modernisation hit its target with LGK-82 and LGK-84 laser-guided smart bombs. F-16 ÖZGÜR fitted with indigenous mission computers dropped the guided bombs from an altitude of 15000 ft. This year, the F-16 ÖZGÜR programme marked a significant milestone with the successful integration of the MURAD AESA radar. This advanced radar system will enhance the aircraft's capabilities, providing onboard air-to-air, air-to-ground, SAR, and electronic warfare capabilities. LGK is a series of guidance kits manufactured by ASELSAN for 250 lb Mk81, 500 lb Mk82, 1000 lb Mk83, and 2000 lb Mk84 general purpose bombs (GPB). The kit provides laser, GPS, and INS guidance capabilities to the bomb it is fitted on. LGK has been tested from F-16 and AKINCI UCAV. ANKA Armed UAV was also displayed with LGK-81 during TEKNOFEST 2023 İzmir, hinting at integration works. Within the framework of the ÖZGÜR Project, national ammunition, electro-optical systems and avionics will be integrated into the F-16 warplanes. The national mission computer and operational flight software developed for this purpose were integrated into the F-16. In addition to these components, several critical avionics systems entered the Turkish Air Force inventory together with the F-16 ÖZGÜR aircraft. Turkiye had requested 79 F-16 Block 70 modernisation kits from the USA. With the ÖZGÜR Project, all remaining F-16s will be modernised to Block ÖZGÜR level.

Turkish Armed Forces Use New Systems in EFES-2024
EFES-2024 exercise to be conducted in İzmir, Turkiye, will house new defence products for different military branches of the Turkish Armed Forces. Turkish Land Forces will use a range of new weapons and sensors for the first time. These include the FIRTINA-2 155 mm SPG, BORAN 105 mm Lightweight Howitzer, PARS 4x4 STA ATGM Vehicle, AMMTS 8x8 Mine Clearing Vehicle, MİLKAR-series electronic attack systems, SURALP Weapon Location Radar, ASELSAN SERHAT Mortar Detection Radar, İHTAR Soft-Kill C-UAS System, ACAR UAV Detection Radar, and inflatable tank decoys. FIRTINA-2 and BORAN are the new Turkish Land Forces’ artillery arsenal additions. FIRTINA-2 is an evolution of T-155 FIRTINA SPG featuring an enhanced fire control system, mast-mounted SARP RCWS, and improved air conditioning for the crew. MKE’s BORAN is a towed/air-transportable 105 mm howitzer that can be carried via S-70/T-70 general-purpose helicopters. MİLKAR series of electronic attack systems include 2A2 Radar Electronic Attack, 3A3 Upper/Lower Band Electronic Attack, and the lightweight 5S variants. SURALP has been in service for roughly three years and was recently spotted in Şırnak. The radar can detect and track the RAM (Rocket-Artillery-Mortar) group of threats to provide situational awareness of up to a range of 250 km. SERHAT fulfils a similar role but can be carried by the smaller 4x4 vehicles. SERHAT has been recently updated to detect UAV threats as well. The increased density of C-UAS systems and weapon location radars points to an effort to increase readiness against the increasing threat of UAVs and RAMs.

Turkiye to Receive First F-16 Viper in mid-2027 Earliest
Turkish Air Force will receive the first F-16 Viper in mid-2027, provided the contract is signed immediately. Anadolu New Agency visited the F-16 Viper production facility in the U.S. and spoke with Aimee P. Burnett, Vice President of Aircraft Strategy and Business Development at Lockheed Martin, about the production progress in connection with the imminent supply of 40 new F-16 Vipers. The assembly, the test flights, and the delivery of the aircraft to the various customers take place at this factory. Burnett said the factory is in the final stages of meeting its production rate target of four aircraft per month and that there is currently a “queue” of 122 aircraft for a total of six countries. Deliveries of the 122 aircraft will take three years to complete, which means that if the Turkish contract is signed today, the delivery of the first aircraft cannot be earlier than mid-2027. If the contract is delayed any further and there are new orders, the delivery time of the first Turkish F-16 Viper will be further delayed.
