Moqtada al Sadr, a prominent Iraqi Shia cleric, has threatened to revive his Mehdi Army and relaunch armed resistance against continued US presence in the country. The threat came as tens of thousands of people marched across the capital Baghdad, marking the eighth anniversary of former leader Saddam Hussein's fall on Saturday.
A spokesperson of al Sadr, said the US had until the end of the year to meet the cleric's demands.

Wie im Artikel auch erwähnt wird ist die Gewalt im Irak deutlich zurückgegangen, nachdem al-Sadr in den Iran ging.
Angesichts dessen wäre es vielleicht für die Entwicklung des Irak ganz gut wenn al-Sadr weiter im Exil bleibt...
Die Bilder der noch friedlichen Demonstrationen gegen die USA waren durchaus beeindruckend. Es ist insofern reichlich naiv, den Wunsch nach einem Abzug der US Streitkräfte auf einzelne Köpfe zu reduzieren. Als ob es nur eines richtigen Demogen bedarf, um die Besatzer zu mögen. :roll:
Sadr hatte gewaltig damit zu kämpfen, dass ein Ayathollah Sistani, die Anführer des Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution (SCIRI) und die schiitischen Personlichkeiten im Libanon und Iran weit höhere religiöse Autorität besitzen als er selbst. So hat Sadr in den letzten Monaten in Ghom die Schulbank gedrückt, ist aber bereits seit Januar wieder zurück in alter Wirkungsstätte.

No one has claimed responsibility for the Monday attack.
Over one million Iraqis have been killed since 2003 in the US-led war and occupation, according to the California-based Project Censored.
Some reports coming out of Iraq say Washington is currently putting pressure on Baghdad in line with its plan to maintain thousands of troops in the country beyond December 31, 2011, when they are required to completely withdraw according to a bilateral treaty.
