ASFAT to Display TF-2000 AAW Destroyer in SAHA EXPO

The TF-2000 Anti-Air Warfare Destroyer will be displayed at the SAHA EXPO 2024 exhibition in Istanbul.
ASFAT, which will build the TF-2000 air defence destroyer at the Istanbul Shipyard Command with the SSIK decision, will display the latest iteration of the TF-2000’s design at SAHA EXPO 2024, which will take place between 22 and 26 October this year.
The exhibition will display TF-2000’s published design changes more clearly. Some of these changes include the removal of ATMACA anti-ship missile launchers for an additional 32 MİDLAS VLS cells and the removal of AYR illumination radar from the ÇAFRAD radar complex.
TF-2000 will be a large leap in terms of the Turkish Navy’s air defence capabilities thanks to 96 strike length MİDLAS VLS cells to house HİSAR-D (40+ km range), SAPAN Block 1/2 (Assumed medium and medium-long range respectively), SİPER Block 1-D (100+ km range), and SİPER Block 2-D (150+ km range) air defence missiles. The close-range defences consist of a GÖKDENİZ CIWS on the stern and a PDMS on the bow (GÖKSUR or LEVENT). In addition to air defence, the ships will be capable of ASuW and land attack missions with vertical-launch ATMACA anti-ship missiles and GEZGİN cruise missiles.

ASFAT Shows MİLDEN Submarine With VLS
ASFAT has shown the MİLDEN submarine with VLS for cruise missiles during the SAHA EXPO 2024 exhibition as the secondary weapon.

The VLS cells will be used to launch cruise missiles, which will likely include ATMACA and GEZGİN.

There has been no statement on whether ROKETSAN's MİDLAS VLS or a new one will be used on the submarine.

The main advantage of using VLS on MİLDEN is the space reserved for more torpedoes in the torpedo bays, as cruise missiles occupy the same space with torpedoes otherwise.

This also shows that MİLDEN will act as a conventional deterrent with comprehensive land attack capabilities in addition to defence against warships and submarines.

The installation of a VLS has been among the possibilities for MİLDEN as the first Turkish-designed submarine is considerably larger than the Type 209 and Reis-class (Type 214TN) submarines of the Turkish Navy.

A similar application is ROK's KSS-III submarines with K-VLS for Hyunmoo 4-4 SRBMs for striking land targets.

Bayraktar TB3 Takes off From TCG ANADOLU LHD

Baykar's Bayraktar TB3 STOL UCAV successfully took off from and landed on TCG ANADOLU (L400) LHD for the first time.
At takeoff, the speed of TCG ANADOLU and the ski jump brought advantage. In the landing phase, the braking system successfully stopped the UCAV slightly at half-length without requiring any arresting gear.

Additionally, the UCAV approached the runway under winds, causing horizontal shifts.
Before the landing on TCG ANADOLU (L 400), night approach tests were performed to validate the automatic landing system.
The flight test from the intended platform, which took place almost a year after the maiden flight from a conventional runway, is a merit of rapid progress in the testing phase.

Turkiye Begins MILDEN, TF-2000, and MUGEM Constructions TurDef
Turkish defence industry activities are at full speed in 2025. The Ministry of National Defence announced at the first press briefing in 2025 that the construction work on MILDEN, TF-2000, and the National Aircraft Carrier (MUGEM) has started.

According to the statement made at the Ministry of National Defence’s weekly press conference, the first welding of the National Submarine (MILDEN) was made at the Gölcük Shipyard Command, and the first steel cutting of the “TF-2000 Air Defence Warfare Destroyer” and the “National Aircraft Carrier” (MUGEM) was made at the Istanbul Shipyard Command, and their construction began.

Turkiye designed MILDEN with the experience it gained from constructing the Reis class AIP submarines produced under license. An alternative AIP technology is developed and will be integrated into MILDEN submarines.

The TF-2000 air defence destroyer and MUGEM work has been ongoing for a long time. The Ministry of National Defence's statement indicates that the desired level of maturity has been reached in the design phase for these three studies to be materialised.

Anadolu Shipyard Launches the Second I-class Frigate TurDef
Multiple footages of TCG İzmir (F-516), the second I-class frigate built by Anadolu Shipyard, being launched, have been shared on social media platforms.

The launch footage shows the frigate meeting the sea from various angles, with one of them being shared by an Instagram account @reis_dalgic, which is up close from the front.

The second ship is seen to be sporting a different type of MİDLAS vertical launch system module that is taller compared to the one on the lead ship TCG İstanbul (F-515). This hints at the possibility of the next ships being fitted with strike-length cells to utilise larger missiles like SİPER Product 1-D/2-D and GEZGİN cruise missiles in future.

Using heavy-duty missiles in tandem with medium-range ones will be viable with the introduction of SAPAN G/M-1 quad-packed medium-range air defence missiles as it would allow for 32 medium-range and eight long-range missiles if half of 16 MİDLAS cells were to be fitted with SİPER missiles. Alternatively, GEZGİN, instead of SİPER, would provide the ships with extensive land attack capability before the TF2000 destroyers’ introduction.

Following the lead ship, three I-class frigates are being built by three shipyards: Anadolu Shipyard, Sedef Shipyard, and Sefine Shipyard, which comprise TAİS. STM and TAİS will cooperate in the process.

The Secretariat of Defence Industries, STM, TAIS, and Anadolu Shipyard (ADIK) have not made an announcement regarding the launch of vessel.

Turkiye Conducts the First Exercise of 2025 as a Naval One
The Turkish Naval Forces welcomed the 2025 with an exercise. The activity took place in the Black Sea, Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea between 7-17 January. In addition to the headquarters activities, actual tasks are carried out in the field. This was not surprising, considering that Turkiye started the new year with the construction of an aircraft carrier, the TF-2000 destroyer and the National Submarine MILDEN.

Blue Homeland-2025 (Mavi Vatan-2025), one of the Turkish Naval Forces' planned exercises, involves land, air and naval elements. The event, which tests the affiliated commands' ability to conduct and manage operations, reasoning and decision-making in a multi-threat environment, also aims to enhance the Turkish Army's interoperation and coordination capability with other force commands.

A total of 77 combat, support and auxiliary surface ships participated in Mavi Vatan-2025. In addition, seven submarines and a fleet of 50 aircraft comprising maritime patrol aircraft, armed/unmanned aerial vehicles and rotary wing elements took part in the operation. The event, which was conducted simultaneously and practically in a multi-domain environment, also involved two underwater offence (SAT) teams, three underwater defence (SAS) teams, and coastal units from base areas, as well as coast and strait commands.
