Beijing has approved funding for major projects to develop core technologies for nuclear-powered vessels, a first official indication of plans to build nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

A report posted on the website of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, the largest state-owned shipbuilder, this week said the Ministry of Science and Technology had approved funding to its 719th Research Institute for two research projects, including core technologies and safety studies for nuclear-powered ships, as well as technical support for small nuclear reactors.
The shipbuilding giant is also the top contractor of the People's Liberation Army Navy and took charge of the refitting work for China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning.
Military experts said the report indicated that Beijing was formally kicking off its plan to develop indigenous nuclear-powered carriers.

Zitat:Carrier of navy's pride
Updated: 2013-04-19 07:32
By Zhao Shengnan (China Daily)
Zhao Shengnan shares her experience on aircraft carrier Liaoning ahead of navy's 64th anniversary on April 23.
Zhang Zheng got his first close-up of an aircraft carrier in Portsmouth, England, in 2002.
A decade later, he was named captain of China's first carrier, Liaoning.
"A big country cannot do without aircraft carriers," said Zhang, 44.
"As captain of China's first aircraft carrier, what I care about most is accomplishing our mission and ensuring the safety of the ship," he said.
...
Now, our job is to conduct tests under increasingly complicated weather conditions, with different types of aircraft carrier-borne jets and a more comprehensive logistic capacity."

"the Chinese navy needs to reach every place that other countries can reach to support the country's growth. The navy has to be able to compete with any naval force from any country in any area," he said.
"The world has been impressed by the navy's anti-piracy efforts in the Gulf of Aden and in Somalian waters, so the role Liaoning will play will further improve China's influence and lead the direction of its naval development."
Since 2008, China has sent 14 naval task forces on escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia. Still, both Liaoning and the Chinese navy have a long way to go, said Captain Zhang.
"It's only natural that the political commissar and I are under pressure in the face of this task and I dare not make any mistakes," .....

BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior officer with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy said on Tuesday that "China will have more than one aircraft carrier."
Song Xue, deputy chief of staff of the PLA Navy, told foreign military attaches at a ceremony to celebrate the Navy's 64th founding anniversary in Beijing, "The next aircraft carrier we need will be larger and carry more fighters."
However, Song said some foreign media reports on China's building new aircraft carriers in Shanghai were not accurate.

Song also said the PLA Navy is building a naval aviation force for the Liaoning, and there will be at least two aviation regiments on one carrier, including fighters, reconnaissance aircraft, anti-submarine aircraft, electronic countermeasure (ECM) planes and rotary-wing aircraft, the report said.

Zitat:China's first generation of 'aircraft carrier professionals'
April 23, 2013
The year 2012 is widely regarded as marking the beginning of an era in the history of Chinese aircraft carriers.
China's first aircraft carrier "Liaoning" was commissioned into the Chinese navy last September and officially anchored in a military port this February.
...
Zhang Zheng, captain of "Liaoning", further elaborates.
"The first stage of the training is focused on building up the soldier's basic abilities and general skills. The second stage develops independent operation of equipments, and the third professionalism and expertise. All of the ship's crew need to pass these three stages; each stage of training weeds out those who can not pass."
Some 80-thousand people have taken part in various training courses related to the operation of the aircraft carrier before its crew was finally unveiled last September.
