The ships of the Car Nicobar-class, named after an island in the Andaman group, are the first water-jet propelled vessels in the Indian Navy. So far the Indian Navy is operating 11 vessels of the class and is expecting to commission three more ships in the near future.

The ship has been fitted with a modern 16-cell vertical launching system (VLS) for firing Barak surface-to-air missiles or locally produced long-range surface-to-air missiles system (LRSAM). The INS Kiltan also features four heavyweight torpedo tube launchers, a pair of 12-barreled RBU6000 rocket depth-charge launchers, and a 76-millimeter medium range gun, as well as two multi-barrel 30 mm guns as close-in-weapon system (CIWS).

Indian Navy signs deal with Tata for portable diver detection sonars

On 15 November, India’s Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division (SED) was awarded a contract for the supply of portable diver detection sonars (PDDSs) to the Indian Navy (IN), intended to enhance the service’s underwater surveillance capabilities and its ability to counter asymmetric threats.

The sonars, which are being acquired under the ‘Make and Buy (Indian)’ category of the Defence Procurement Procedure-2016 (DPP-2016), will be manufactured by Tata Power SED under a transfer of technology from Israel’s DSIT Solutions, according to India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB). [...]

A Scotland-based company expects to supply two third-generation deep search and rescue vehicles (DSRVs) to the Indian Navy by June following the successful completion of harbour acceptance trials. The two complete flyaway submarine rescue vehicles are to be delivered under a £193-million contract awarded to JFD, a leading underwater capability provider, in March 2016.

The systems include launch and recovery systems equipment, “transfer under pressure” systems, and all logistics and support equipment required to operate the DSRVs. [...] Following the harbour acceptance trials, the DSRV will be fully integrated with the rest of the rescue system at a site in Glasgow, including the offshore handling system, intervention suite and 90-person decompression facilities.

Ben Sharples, India DSRV project director at JFD, said: “The completion of the initial harbour acceptance trials for the first DSRV, to be delivered to the Indian Navy, is an important step in the delivery of this contract. [...] JFD said the system had been developed to maximise the chances of successfully rescuing the crew of a distressed submarine. The full certified systems are due to be delivered to Indian Navy in June, it said.

A total of 72 Indian Navy personnel have also been trained by JFD at a facility in Scotland to operate the vessels. The Indian Navy, which operates a mix of Russian and Western submarines, has for long projected a need for deep sea rescue vessels to cope with possible accidents.

After clearing the procurement of these submarines in the Defence Acquisition Council, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has put a Navy officer as the in-charge of the project. An empowered project committee has been formed with the Navy's Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition as the head of the panel including several other Joint Secretaries as its members. Navy wants to have a mix of conventional and nuclear submarines in its fleet to manage its area responsibility stretching from the Malacca Straits to the Indian Ocean Region.

Notably, the Indian Navy already has a fleet of Russian Kamov-28 and US made Sea-king choppers which were inducted in the service way back in the 1980s and require upgrades for future use. The election season has not affected the daily operations of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) and Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The meetings are being held as per the plans to clear the important acquisitions for the forces.

MDL delivers second Scorpène submarine to Indian Navy

India's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has delivered another licence-built Kalvari (Scorpène)-class diesel-electric submarine (SSK) to the Indian Navy. The vessel, which will be in service as INS Khanderi once commissioned, was handed over on 19 September at a delivery ceremony in Mumbai.

Khanderi is the second of six boats ordered under an INR230 billion (USD3.2 billion) contract signed with Naval Group (then known as DCNS) in October 2005 under India's Project 75 submarine programme. The programme's first-of-class, INS Kalvari , was commissioned in December 2017.

Khanderi was launched in January 2017 and was originally scheduled for commissioning in early 2018 after it took to the water. This has since been postponed to 28 September 2019, as reported by Jane's earlier in the month citing senior Indian Navy officials. The 66 m boat can accommodate a crew of 31 including six officers and can attain a top speed of 20 kt when dived. [...]

Ich verstehe zwar leider nicht wirklich viel von Schiffen, aber meiner Ansicht nach sieht es auch so aus.

Aircraft carriers

Vishal will be the most expensive defence platform of India, subject to funding approval from the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Still in its conceptual phase, the proposed aircraft carrier will join INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant, the latter of which is expected to undergo sea trials by the end of 2020. Vishal will be the second indigenous aircraft carrier after Vikrant.

With three carriers, the Indian Navy will have the capability to ensure the availability of at least two carriers at sea, while the other undergoes overhaul, repair and maintenance in the yard. [...]

Submarines

The Indian Navy will procure six diesel-electric submarines under the Project-75 India (Project-75I or P75I) programme worth Rs550bn ($7.51bn). Being developed as the successor of the Project 75 Kalvari-class programme, Project-75I will deliver a new class of attack submarines equipped with advanced air-independent propulsion systems that will allow them to stay submerged for longer duration and ensure increased operational range. [...] The Indian Navy plans to acquire a total of 24 submarines, including six nuclear-capable submarines. A project to build a new class of 13,500t ballistic missile submarines is also underway. Known as S-5, the submarines will be twice the weight of the Arihant-class submarines and have the capacity to carry 12 nuclear missiles, according to Indian media. Final design work for the submarine is ongoing. Furthermore, the proposed $17bn Project 75 Alpha nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSN) programme is progressing, with the preliminary design phase completed as of February 2020.

Frigates

The Project 17A programme, which will deliver seven advanced frigates, was approved by the Indian Government in February 2015 to enhance the Indian Navy’s combat capability. MDSL will construct four Nilgiri-class frigates while GRSE will build the remaining three, under the project worth approximately Rs500bn ($7bn). The lead ship of the class, INS Nilgiri, was launched in September 2019 while the keel of the third frigate of the class was laid in September 2020. [...]

In einem revolutionären Schritt auf dem Weg von „ake in India“ zu „Make from India“ unterzeichnete Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) gestern ein Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) mit der Naval Group France, einem führenden Unternehmen der europäischen Marineverteidigung Zusammenarbeit der Industrie auf dem Gebiet der Überwasserschiffe, die den Anforderungen der indischen und internationalen Seestreitkräfte gerecht werden.

Mit diesem MoU werden beide Unternehmen zusammenarbeiten und sich engagieren, um High-End-Überwasserschiffe anzubieten, die auf dem seeerprobten Gowind-Design basieren, das für den Exportmarkt entwickelt wurde.
Nach dem Bau von über 100 Kriegsschiffen für indische und ausländische Seestreitkräfte wird GRSE eng mit der französischen und indischen Industrie zusammenarbeiten. Das MoU zielt auch darauf ab, die Fähigkeiten beider Unternehmen zu nutzen, um die wachsenden Anforderungen der Schiffbauindustrie zu erfüllen und ein robustes Weltklasseprodukt anzubieten, das die State-of-the-Art-Fähigkeiten beider Organisationen nutzt.
Diese Mischung aus moderner Technologie, Innovation und Ressourcenmanagement durch indische und französische Marineindustrieführer wird ein echtes Wertversprechen für internationale Marinen sein. The Project 15B (P15B) / Visakhapatnam-class is the latest destroyer design currently under construction for the Indian Navy. These ships have been designed indigenously by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design, New Delhi. Each ship spans 163 metres in length and 17.4 metres at beam and displaces 7,300 tonnes. These ships will be propelled by four gas turbines to achieve speed in excess of 30 knots. [...]

The Visakhapatnam-class shares several sensor and weapon systems with its preceding design, the Kolkata-class (Project 15A) of destroyers: The IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR S-band AESA multi-function radar, Thales LW-08 D-band air search radar, BEL HUMSA-NG bow sonar are fitted on both classes. Like Project 15A, the Project 15B will be fitted with 32x Barak 8 surface to air missiles (launched from VLS cells) as well as 16 BrahMos anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles. While the Visakhapatnam-class was initially set to receive a 127mm main gun (by BAE Systems), the main gun is finally similar to that of the Kolkata-class: 76mm by Leonardo.
