Höchster Einsatz in diesem Polit-Poker ist jenes Eiland, das portugiesische Seefahrer einst „die Schöne“ (Formosa) tauften und das unter dem Namen Taiwan berühmt wurde – als abtrünnige chinesische Republik, dessen völkerrechtlicher Status bis heute ungeklärt ist.
Höhnten westliche Militärstrategen noch vor wenigen Jahren, für das antiquierte chinesische Militär sei ein Angriff auf Taiwan allenfalls als Selbstmordaktion denkbar, wenn die roten Machthaber eine Million Soldaten vom Festland auf die Insel schwimmen ließen, so ist inzwischen durch etliche Studien belegt: China könnte mit hochmodernen Raketen Taiwan innerhalb weniger Stunden militärisch „enthaupten“ und das wehrlose Land einnehmen – eine Gegenaktion der USA käme in jedem Fall zu spät.

etwas tendentiös, der Artikel: die USA haben im südchinesischen Meer genauso viel - oder so wenig - zu suchen wie die Chinesen in der Karibik. Was im MARINEFORUM als
"Maritime Search and Rescue Centre has sent rescue ship NAN HAI JIU" bezeichnet wird, gibt dem FOCUS anscheinend am gleichen Tag Anlass, sämtliche drei chinesischen Flotten im südchinesischen Meer zu konzentrieren und eine Auseinandersetzung mit der US Navy zu beschwören.
Und bei aller Aufrüstung der PLAN - die ist noch Generationen und Jahrzehnte auch nicht im Ansatz in der Lage, die US Navy herauszufordern.

The Chinese ministry of defence confirmed earlier media reports that one of its navy frigates was spotted near the disputed island of Half Moon Shoal, currently controlled by Philippines.

The stranded Chinese vessel was later identified as a Jianghu-I Class Missile Frigate of the PLAN. Brigadier General Elmer Amon, an official with the Philippine Navy (PN) meanwhile said that his forces are ready to assist the Chinese vessel and its crew, if they are really in distress.
The Half Moon Shoal is a part of the disputed Spratly Islands, the ownership of which is disputed by China, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

Commodore Rustom Pena, the Philippine Naval Forces West commander announced today that Philippine Naval vessels are on their way to the Half Moon Shoal. The naval sources said that vessels will ascertain the overall situation in the area and will conduct an enquiry over the latest developments. Currently Philippines is engaged in a diplomatic standoff with China over the disputed territory of Scarborough Shoal.

Die Fregatte DONGGUAN führte am 11. Juli einen Patrouilleneinsatz im Spratly Archipel durch, als sie beim Half Moon Shoal plötzlich auf Grund lief und „unbeweglich fest saß“. Angeblich sollte das zur JIANGHU-5-Klasse gehörende Schiff (1993 i.D.) philippinische Fischer aus dem territorial umstrittenen Gebiet nur knapp 60 sm westlich der philippinischen Insel Palawan vertreiben.
Andere Quellen sprechen von Routinepräsenz oder einem Vermessungseinsatz zur Sammlung u.a. hydrographischer Daten. Diese Version ist durchaus wahrscheinlicher, denn China hat in den letzten Jahren bei bisherigen derartigen „Souveränitätskonflikten“ routinemäßig immer nur Schiffe oder Boote der paramilitärischen China Marine Surveillance (CMS) oder der Fischereischutzbehörde (FLEC) gegen fremde Fischer eingesetzt, also ganz bewusst unterhalb der militärischen Ebene gehandelt.
Alle gebräuchlichen Seekarten verzeichnen die „Hasa-Hasa Untiefe“ beim Half Moon Shoal, und so bleibt vorerst unklar, warum der Kommandant sein doch recht großes Kampfschiff mit mehr als drei Meter Tiefgang ausgerechnet in dieses Gebiet steuerte. Die philippinische Küstenwache bemerkte den Vorfall offenbar erst, nachdem ein kleines Aufklärungsflugzeug bei einem Routineflug die festsitzende chinesische Fregatte entdeckte. Zwei Tage später waren bereits fünf weitere chinesische Fahrzeuge und einige kleinere (vermutlich) Fischerboote beim Havaristen eingetroffen. Unter den Augen von nun ebenfalls an den Ort des Geschehens verlegten Einheiten der philippinischen Marine und Küstenwache gelang es ihnen am 15. Juli mit vereinten Kräften schließlich, die Fregatte vom Riff wieder in tieferes Wasser zu ziehen.
Eine erste Befundung soll nur leichte Schäden im Heckbereich ergeben haben. Schrauben und Ruder scheinen beim Auflaufen sogar völlig unbeschädigt geblieben zu sein; zumindest konnte sich die Fregatte aus eigener Kraft in Richtung Heimathafen auf den Weg machen. Trotz solchermaßen Glück im Unglück dürfte der von allen Regionalnachbarn hämisch beobachtete und „süffisant“ in den dortigen Medien dargestellte Vorfall für den Kommandanten sicher noch nicht beendet sein. „Gesichtsverlust“ hat auch im heutigen Asien noch unverändert große Bedeutung.
